Research and Clinical Studies

Our Commitment to Research in Chinese Medicine
At Phoenix Medical, we believe that robust research and development are essential for the sustainability and advancement of Chinese medicine. We are proud to collaborate with leading universities and research institutions in the UK and internationally to support evidence-based research that validates and strengthens traditional practices.
We actively contribute to the field by supplying high-quality products, funding key research projects, and participating in clinical studies that explore the efficacy and safety of Chinese herbal medicine.
Current Research: Clinical Trial for COPD
One of our most significant recent initiatives is a government-funded clinical trial investigating a Chinese herbal formula for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). We are honoured to be working in collaboration with:
- The Centre for Evidence-Based Chinese Medicine at Beijing University of Chinese Medicine.
- Southampton Clinical Trials Unit (SCTU) at the University of Southampton.
Funded by Innovate UK and China’s Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST), this international clinical trial aims to evaluate the role of Chinese medicine in managing COPD, a chronic lung disease affecting over one million people in the UK.
Currently, antibiotics and steroids are the standard treatment for COPD flare-ups, yet studies reveal that only 35% of these exacerbations require antibiotics. This trial seeks to reduce unnecessary antibiotic use by offering a Chinese herbal medicine alternative, tested in collaboration with primary care centres in the UK and affiliated hospitals in China.

The RUTI Trial - University of Southampton

Phoenix Medical was selected as the herbal medicine supplier for the RUTI trial at the University of Southampton, a 16-week, multi-centre, randomised, double-blind feasibility study investigating the use of Chinese herbal medicine for treating recurrent urinary tract infections (RUTIs).
We supplied high-quality herbs sourced from either wild habitats or carefully cultivated fields in China. Each herb was dried, stored, and processed following traditional methods with modern quality controls. Every batch included a Certificate of Analysis and was tested for authenticity, heavy metals, and microbial contamination.
The ORCHID Study – University of Southampton
From 2012 to 2013, Phoenix Medical proudly supported the ORCHID study conducted by the University of Southampton. This study explored the potential of Chinese herbal medicine in managing symptoms of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS).
Led by the late Professor George Lewith alongside Dr. Michael Moore, Dr. Andrew Flower, and Dr. Lily Lai, the study was funded by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR). As an RCHM-approved supplier, Phoenix Medical was the sole provider of concentrated herbal medicine used in the trial.
The results of this study were published in the European Journal of Integrative Medicine.

At Phoenix Medical, we are proud to be a trusted partner in advancing the evidence base of Chinese medicine. Our ongoing dedication to research reflects our mission: to combine tradition with scientific integrity and improve healthcare outcomes through safe, effective and sustainable herbal practices.
